Brief overview of local bus services

Please note: Below covers 'normal' bus services. Most operators are currently running a reduced special Coronavirus service see our news page, or use operators website etc. on the right.

Brighton, Shoreham etc:

The Brighton area probably has the best bus service in the
south-east (with almost all local bus services listed in Brighton & Hove Bus Company's Comprehensive timetable 'Bus Times').

The main bus company is the Brighton & Hove Bus Company, which runs frequent bus services to most parts of the city (including 10 minute services towards Lewes and Eastbourne). There is a fairly comprehensive evening & Sunday service, including several night services (mostly running 6 nights a week). Stagecoach runs the 10 minute service 700, towards Worthing, and beyond; and the half-hourly service 17 to Horsham. The Big Lemon has taken over a number of supported bus services, within the area, including running services 16/66, 47/57, 52 and 56. Compass Travel still runs the service 37/37B. Metrobus runs services to/from mid Sussex and Crawley/East Grinstead.
Southern Transit runs the service 3, from Shoreham (Holmbush) to Horsham, via Henfield and Southwater. This runs Thursdays throughout the year, and also at weekends, in high summer. Brighton & Hove local bus map : : Shoreham/Southwick map

Lewes, Newhaven, Seaford:

In addtion to Brighton & Hove Bus Company's main services, there are a number of less frequent services (mostly run on a tendered basis), run by- Compass Bus and Cuckmere Community bus. Many are detailed in the comprehensive Brighton & Hove Time bus timetable.

Worthing, Lancing, Littlehampton:

Most services are run by Stagecoach, based in Worthing- including the service 700 and the 'Pulse' service, which runs every 10 minutes. The former through service 700, from Brighton to Portsmouth has been split into three, to improve reliability. Locally the Brighton-Worthing-Littlehampton- runs every 10 minutes. Changes are required in Littlehampton and Chichester, for those continuing from Brighton to Portsmouth (you masochist!). The former 700 Arundel service, has been replaced by the hourly service 9 (which starts from Shoreham, and takes a less direct route).

A number of bus services run on Sunday in the Worthing area. However apart from the service 700 and the Pulse, many bus services terminate before 8.30pm, on Monday to Saturday evenings! (although Stagecoach should also be praised for improvements to some evening services, including later buses on the 700, on Sunday Evenings).

Compass Bus runs several bus services (including 8/8A, 16 and the new service 7), and Metrobus runs the Worthing-Horsham-Crawley service.

Worthing bus map (April 12). Please note: since this map was produced: the service 7 has been reduced to an hourly service and replaced the service 6.

Real time information is now available in Worthing etc. on
West Sussex's real-time information website.

Mid Sussex (including Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath).

Within our area; both Metrobus and Compass Travel run services in Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath. For the latest information, it is best to look at both companies websites (or use their contact numbers) to find out the latest bus information, as they have previously updated their services more than usual.

The April '16 timetables have brought significant changes to mid Sussex services. Metrobus has withdrawn its local Burgess Hill circular service. Compass Travel has withdrawn its remaining services to Brighton, because they were not financially viable; and made other changes in Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath.

Now a summery of mid-sussex services to/from Brighton

On Monday to Friday, Metrobus runs 2 to 3 buses per hour - through Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and Hassocks, to Brighton. Its weekday version of the former 40X, is now called the 271 & 272. These services service provide the 'official' link between the Princes Royal Hospital (Haywards Heath), and the County Hospital (Brighton), and combine to give an hourly service; providing free travel for patients and staff. Both services continue to Crawley, via different routes. There is also the hourly 270 to East Grinstead, and irregular service 273 to Crawley, via Hurstpierpoint, and Bolney.

Everything changes on Saturdays. The 271 and 272 combine to give a near hourly combined service. This doubles to twice hourly when the 270 is included.

On Sundays, the Metrobus 270 (from East Grinstead) and 271 (from Crawley), combine to offer an approximately hourly service. This is a welcome improvement, over the previous 2 hourly offering.

Real time information on Metrobus services in mid Sussex, Crawley etc. can be found on Metrobus real-time information.

Compass Travel also runs the service 100, in Burgess Hill.

Horsham/Crawley/East Grinstead/Gatwick.
While outside our main area, most services are run by Metrobus.

Eastbourne, Hastings, Chichester.
While outside our main area, many services are run by different sections of Stagecoach (also see East & West Sussex websites).

Compass Travel also runs a number of bus services.

As previously mentioned the former 700 through service, has been split into three:-

Brighton-Littlehampton
Littlehampton-Chichester
Chichester-Portsmouth & Southsea
